The area originally planned as Hampstead Village in 1789 was an early Charleston suburb known for openness and symmetry, and although altered by years of growth and physical development, today's "East Side" area has considerable investment potential. Home of one of Charleston's most noted artisans, wrought iron mastersmith Philip Simmons, Hampstead features a number of historic homes, most notable being The Faber House, an 1836 Palladian Villa with giant Ionic columns and domed cupola.

Hampstead's Columbus Street Park area borders technical college and business park facilities at The Cigar Factory, an 1882 cotton mill that was later used to produce and export tobacco products. Hampstead has benefitted from a resurgence in investment and restoration in recent decades, as well as location of the new Charleston School of Law along an emerging Meeting Street corridor.
