t is little
wonder that a city with the history, charm and affluence of
Charleston, S.C., also would have a strong equestrian pedigree.
Perhaps the most
visible sign of the city’s horse-riding heritage can be seen at
The College of Charleston, which fields one of the nation’s top
equestrian teams year after year. The school’s equestrian team
has won the Intercollegiate Horse Show
Association Regional Championship 18 times, and it has finished
among the top-10 during Nationals every year since 1984.
Elsewhere, the
city’s love of horses and high society combine on the second
Sunday in November for the Charleston Cup steeplechase race. The
Charleston Cup is held at The Plantation at Stono Ferry, 20 miles
south of Charleston. This real estate and home community offers a
private equestrian facility for riding and boarding horses.
Spectators also
frequent the Mullet Hall Equestrian Center at Johns Island County
Park, which hosts numerous competitive horse shows, festivals,
events and exhibitions. For those who would rather ride than
watch, Mullet Hall Equestrian Center offers approximately 20 miles
of trails that wind through the 738-acre site.
The
Seabrook
Equestrian Center, which offers boarding to island residents and
non-residents, is considered one of the best horse facilities in
Charleston and throughout South Carolina. The Center offers
private and group lessons for all levels of experience, and among
its trails is one of the few beach rides along the Atlantic
Ocean.
