The Scanlonville area encompasses several neighborhoods in Mount Pleasant. It offers an historic, largely waterfront location on Remley’s Point less than five minutes from downtown Charleston. Purchased as property for newly-emancipated slaves after the Civil War, the tract bounded by Molasses Creek and the Wando River became a haven for freedman who would build homes and a thriving center of African-American culture. Carved from the former Remley’s Plantation along scenic Mathis Ferry Road, the community was largely made up of farmers and craftspeople, and fresh produce can still be found on roadside markets there. Riverside Beach became a famous gathering point for Charleston’s African American community by the 1930’s, boasting a ferris wheel and other entertainment overlooking the Wando River and Charleston Harbor. Nearby, White’s Paradise evolved as a beacon of African musical heritage, featuring jazz and blues artists such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and B.B. King.

Today Scanlonville offers excellent value in properties ranging from newly-constructed waterfront homes to mid-20th century ranch houses, as well as open lots, all overlooking or within a stone’s throw of oak-lined Molasses Creek. Prices range from the 300k on older homes to 750-900k for new construction, an eye-popping value so close to historic Charleston. The Remley’s Point area has a public boat ramp to the Wando River, and is within a few minutes of the state-of-the-art recreational facilities at Patriot’s Point and the beautiful new Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. Also nearby are delicious restaurants such as Langdon’s and Graze, as well as boutique shopping at Gwynn’s, and the always popular nightlife scene at Shem Creek. And Mount Pleasant schools are among the most highly-rated of all the districts in Charleston County. Scanlonville combines the feel of tradition and natural splendor in a location that is one of the most desired in the Charleston area.

Popular neighborhoods in the Scanlonville area are River Reach, Remley's Park, River Watch.
