Site of the original settlement of Charleston and home to quaint neighborhoods, historic plantations and lush natural settings, West Ashley has long been a great place to call home. This expansive area bordered by the scenic Ashley and Stono Rivers and the Intracoastal Waterway is only a bridge-crossing from downtown Charleston. In 1670, it was the protected creeks and bluffs of the West Ashley area that was chosen for the first permanent settlement of the province of Carolina, and for ten years, the original capitol, then called Charles Town, was located there until the city moved across to the current peninsula location in 1680.
Much of the West Ashley area is within Charleston's city limits today, including Charles Town Landing State Park, site of the original settlement, where a historic replicas of the initial homesites are part of a beautiful outdoor experience. The Park includes a stunning animal forest area, designed by famed naturalist Jim Fowler, in which groups of animals indigenous tot he state, including bison, black bear, elk, timber wolf, bobcat, alligator, deer, otter and fox can be viewed easily in open habitats bordering the marshes of the Ashley River.
West Ashley is renowned for its traditional, quiet neighborhoods tucked away along oak-lined streets and near marshes, creeks and waterways. Enchanting residential areas such as The Crescent, Wappoo Heights and Edgewater Park feature stunning vistas, charming houses and ideal location less than five minutes from downtown.
West Ashley is a shoppers' delight with a variety of outstanding malls and exclusive car dealerships along the Savannah Highway corridor, and features a large number of restaurants and specialty delicatessens in the South Windermere area and along the Sam Rittenberg Highway corridor.
